GEO is just SEO that finally rewards the boring work
Generative Engine Optimization isn't a new playbook bolted onto SEO. It's the same playbook, with the unglamorous tactics suddenly leading, and a measurement problem nobody is solving yet.

Last week a customer typed your best long-tail keyword into ChatGPT. They got a confident, well-cited answer in twelve seconds. They never opened a tab. They never saw your page. They may not have realized your category still had a search-engine results page.
This is the part of GEO the breathless takes get wrong. The funnel didn't break. It shortened. The unit of value moved from the click to the citation. And the playbook that got you here, the one your team has been politely ignoring since 2021, is suddenly the one that wins.
What GEO actually is
Generative Engine Optimization is the practice of structuring your content, metadata, and off-page presence so that AI answer engines (ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Grok) surface your brand inside the answers they generate. Not on a results page. Inside the answer.
It overlaps with SEO. It is not SEO. The differences are small in the abstract and large in practice:
- Rank → cite. Google ranked ten pages and let the user pick. An answer engine reads many pages and writes one paragraph. Your goal isn't to be one of ten. It's to be one of the few quoted, named, or linked inside that paragraph.
- Click → mention. A citation may not produce a click. It still produces awareness, brand recall, and (when the user does click through to verify) an unusually high-intent visitor. Treat the mention as the conversion event upstream of the click.
- Page → passage. Engines retrieve and quote passages, not whole pages. The unit of optimization shrinks from the document to the paragraph.
Same skill tree. Different end state.
Why the engines cite what they cite
Nobody outside Google, OpenAI, and a few research labs knows the exact retrieval logic. But after a year of watching what gets cited and what doesn't, a few patterns hold up.
- Retrieval is grounded in the open web. Despite the LLM framing, every major answer engine reaches into a search index, whether Google's, Bing's, or its own, pulls candidate sources, and synthesizes from those. The page still has to be findable. Crawlable, indexable, fast.
- Recency wins certain queries, not all. For 'best [tool] in 2026,' engines lean on freshness. For 'what is [concept],' they lean on authority. Optimizing one while ignoring the other will leave half your prompt distribution on the table.
- Original data outranks aggregation. Engines preferentially cite primary sources: first-party numbers, original studies, named methodologies. Aggregator sites are increasingly cited for the brand they reference, not for themselves.
- Brand mentions across the open web matter. Off-page presence (your name on Reddit, in podcast transcripts, in industry roundups) feeds the entity model the engines use to decide whether you exist and what you're for. This is the part SEO professionals have always known and clients have always underfunded.
- Structured passages get pulled. A paragraph that opens with a noun phrase and a clean definition, or a Q&A block where the question matches the user's prompt, is shaped like a citation. The engine's extractor is happier. You get pulled.
The mental model: you aren't writing for the reader anymore. You're writing for an editor who is writing for the reader, and that editor has thirty seconds and a hundred candidate sources.
The tactics that suddenly matter most
None of this is new. All of it was on the SEO best-practices list. Most teams skipped most of it. Here is the order in which they suddenly matter.
1. Original data and primary research
A single proprietary study, whether your own benchmark, your own survey, or your own internal usage stats turned into a public chart, is worth ten 'ultimate guide' posts. It gets cited by name, often with a link, and it's the shortest path to brand mentions in third-party content that feeds the entity model.
2. Comparison and 'vs' content
'X vs Y,' 'alternatives to X,' 'best X for [use case]'. Engines disproportionately surface these in answers because users disproportionately phrase prompts that way. The asset costs less than a pillar post and earns citations from a much wider prompt distribution.
3. Structured Q&A passages
Not a hidden FAQ schema buried in the footer. Actual question-shaped headings followed by 30-to-60-word definitive answers. Build them into the post body. They are citation-shaped.
4. Off-page brand mentions
Get your name mentioned where the engines crawl: Reddit threads, niche newsletters, podcast show notes, community wikis, GitHub READMEs if you're technical. Unlinked mentions count more than they used to. The entity model needs to learn you exist.
5. Author authority and entity consistency
One author, one bio, one role, identical across the site, LinkedIn, and the third-party places you publish. The engines are stitching identities. Your CMO listed three different ways across four sites is a lower-confidence entity than one listed identically everywhere.
If you do nothing else this quarter, ship one piece of original data and three comparison pages. Watch what happens.
The thing nobody is measuring
Here is the gap. Almost every marketing team can tell you their organic ranking for ten keywords. Almost none can tell you their citation share across the answer engines. Not because they don't care. Because there is no Search Console for ChatGPT.
A useful GEO dashboard answers four questions, and they don't fit inside a Google Search Console export:
- Which prompts surface us, and which don't? Pick fifty prompts your customer is actually typing. Run them across every engine, weekly. Track presence, position within the answer, and whether the citation is linked.
- What is our citation share against named competitors? Of the prompts where any brand in your category gets cited, what percentage cite you?
- Are we drifting? A brand cited in March and not in May has either lost the entity battle or lost a structural change in retrieval. You won't notice without a baseline.
- Why are we cited when we are? Every citation traces back to a passage. Reading the passage tells you which content earns its keep and which doesn't.

What to do this quarter
A three-step program a marketer can take to their manager Monday morning.
- Pick twenty prompts. Real ones. The questions your sales team gets on calls, your support team gets in tickets, your category gets in subreddits. Write them down.
- Baseline across four to six engines. ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude. Add Grok and Siri if your audience uses them. Record who gets cited, including you, including competitors. Save the answers verbatim. They'll change.
- Ship two pieces of original-data content. One survey, one benchmark, one internal-stats post. Pick the easiest. Recheck the prompts in 30 days. Adjust.
That's it. The boring work, finally rewarded.
